Cassell and Comapany, Ltd

1904 Hardcover Very Good
6 small folio vols measuring 10.25" x 13.5". Numbered limited edition 956/1000 copies. Considering their age they're in remarkable condition. Each of Dante's books takes up in two volumes. Backed in finely ribbed blue cloth with illustrated paper over the boards. There is some uneven fading to the covers. 120 full-page gravure plates by Gustave Dore, printed on Japanese vellum. The rest of the book is letterpress on thick cotton or linen paper. Overall is probably near fine to fine VG because the first two volumes (Hell are more worn, (loosely backed.. with a plates that needed to be retipped in. _so they show more edge wear. Vol 1 of Purgatory has an external damp stain on the inner part of back cover (roughly 6" x 2.5" -running along the cloth), AND a dark stain affecting a few pages at the upper margin. Also affects 1 plate and one tissue guard. The margins of two plates are affected but one is rather minor. -see scans) A couple of the plates in the Hell volumes have been expertly re-tipped. Occasional crease or edge tear on a tissue guard, otherwise generally fine 202033
